I was wondering the same thing, as the scene was playing. At no point was he like, "Where did you find this photo?" Or was Ayumi like, "There's some water in the hallway".

I think it was because he was a genius at playing the piano. His brother, in middle school, showed him how to "cheat", but the kid knew a lot about piano because of his genius and because his mom forced him to practice all the time.
